Which treatment fits depends on how much healthy tooth remains, how many teeth are involved, and the condition of the bone and gums supporting them.
Repairing a tooth versus replacing it
When enough natural tooth survives, the aim is to keep it: a crown caps and protects what is left, and root canal treatment can save a tooth that would otherwise come out. Once a tooth is gone, the question changes to how to fill the gap. An implant stands on its own in the bone, a bridge spans the space using the neighbouring teeth, and a partial denture lifts in and out.
Why gaps are worth addressing
Teeth rely on their neighbours to stay put. After a loss, the teeth either side tend to drift and the opposing tooth can over-erupt, which gradually changes how your bite meets. The bone that once held the root also remodels over time. None of this is an emergency, but it does mean the options generally get simpler the sooner you look at them.
Planning around your gums and bone
Restorations depend on a stable foundation, so periodontal health is assessed before anything is built. Where gum disease has cost bone, that is treated first, and in some cases grafting is discussed before an implant is considered. Sequencing the work this way takes longer up front but avoids rebuilding on ground that is still moving.
